About us

The Texas school directory we wanted to exist

When school starts, when the breaks fall, which campus an address is zoned to, how a school is rated — those facts sit across 1,221 district websites, a state open-data portal and a stack of PDFs. This site puts them on one page per district and per campus, with the source credited on every one.

1,221 Districts & charters every public school district in Texas
9,737 Campuses indexed from TEA records
1,080 2026–2027 calendars with published key dates
2,052 Printable calendars 1,529 district + 523 campus sheets
1,017 Boundary maps district attendance boundaries
253 / 254 Counties covered across all 20 ESC regions

The printable calendar, and who it is for

Every district with published dates gets a one-page sheet like these — the whole school year on US Letter, each marked day coloured by what it is, and the key dates listed on a second page. Each district's sheet is generated from that district's own dates, so no two are the same:

Houston ISD 2026-2027 printable school calendar, page 1 of 2
Houston ISD · 36 dates
North East ISD 2026-2027 printable school calendar, page 1 of 2
North East ISD · 47 dates
Katy ISD 2026-2027 printable school calendar, page 1 of 2
Katy ISD · 35 dates

It saves a particular kind of trip to the district website:

  • Parents booking time off. Breaks and student holidays are the days childcare has to be arranged, and they are the hardest dates to dig out of a district PDF. Here they are on one sheet, months ahead.
  • Anyone without a printer at hand. The same dates are on the page itself and in a calendar feed you can subscribe to, so the sheet is a convenience, not the only copy.
  • Grandparents and carers doing school runs. A sheet on the fridge answers “is there school tomorrow” without anyone logging in to a portal.
  • Campus offices and teachers who want the year at a glance without opening a 12-page district document.

What this site does

  • Calendars. The 2026–2027 key dates for each district — first and last day, holidays, breaks and grading periods — with the district's own published calendar shown alongside and a one-page printable you can pin to a fridge.
  • District and campus profiles. Enrollment, grade range, county and ESC region, superintendent, TEA accountability rating, NCES demographics, and the attendance boundary drawn on a map.
  • Direct answers. Is my address in this zone? When is spring break? What did this campus score? Each is a fact on a page, not a search box.

Where the data comes from

Nothing here is invented, and every page names its source:

  • Districts and campuses — Texas Education Agency (TEA) ArcGIS Open Data — Schools 2023–2024, via the TEA ArcGIS open-data platform. Dataset last generated July 30, 2026.
  • Accountability ratings and report cards — the Texas Education Agency's published A–F ratings and school report cards.
  • Enrollment and demographics — the U.S. National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) Common Core of Data.
  • Boundary maps — TEA district boundary polygons, simplified for fast rendering, on an OpenStreetMap basemap.
  • Calendar dates — each district's own published calendar. Its official image is shown on the calendar page and credited with a link back to the district's website.

How it is built

Every page is pre-rendered static HTML, so it loads fast on mobile data. The printable calendars are generated from the same dates shown on the page, so a sheet can never disagree with the site — when a district revises its calendar, the page and the sheet are rebuilt together.

What we are careful about

  • Dates change. Boards amend calendars mid-year, especially after bad-weather days. Every calendar page links the district's official calendar, and we say plainly that time-sensitive dates should be confirmed there.
  • We are not the district. Nothing here is an official district communication, and we never present it as one.
  • Corrections are welcome. If a date, rating or boundary is wrong, tell us and we will fix it — see below.

Back to School Texas is founded and maintained by Khurram Shahzad, curator at Schools Publishing Ltd. It started from a small annoyance: answering “when does school start” meant opening a different website for every district in Texas. It now covers all 1,221 of them.

Found something wrong?

Corrections take priority over everything else here. Send the page URL and what should change, and include the district page or document it came from if you have it — that is what lets us fix it the same day. Contact us.

Independence

Back to School Texas is an independent project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or operated by the Texas Education Agency, the U.S. Department of Education, or any school district. District names, logos and calendars belong to those districts and are shown for identification, with the source credited. Always confirm details — especially calendar dates and enrollment — against the official district source linked on each page.
